By 1790 this was the second largest community in the area with Glasgow being the largest. In 1809 J. C Watson built the first store here and the community became known as "Watson's Store." When Watson's Store was incorporated in 1817 it was given the name Tompkinsville, in honor of Daniel D. Tompkins, current Vice-President of the United States. The county was carved from parts of Barren and Cumberland counties on January 19, 1820 and named for the current United States President, James Monroe. Tompkinsville won a hotly contested election to become the county seat of Monroe County. In doing so, Monroe County became the only county in the United States named for a President where the county seat is named for the contemporary Vice-President.
